Inexpensive folding TEMPORARY workstand. Cheap, non-sturdy construction. Will require careful handling to last more than a year or two.
Wanted a new workmate because the one I've had for many years is fantastic, although all the pegs are long lost. I though, "Hey, cool!" when I found this one at the local "helpful" hardware store. When I got it home and out of the box, I was disappointed. Cheap and THIN stamped metal parts; Cheap plastic handles and bench dogs; difficult assembly; unclear instructions. Quality is far less than my old beat-up workmate. This won't last long, is not very sturdy, so will just be a TEMPORARY stand until I either build or find a better one. The only redeeming factor is that the wood work surface is actually wood (my old workmate is laminated particle board, although still in decent shape). What I may actually do is take the old particle board off and put the new, solid plywood on my old stand. Hopefully it will fit without having to do any serious adjustments. I WON'T buy another one if Black and Decker don't improve their build quality, instead I will repair my old one for as long as I can.

Inexpensive, "quick fix" replacement; actual hardwood plywood for the work surface, the screw handles operate smoothly. Unfortunately, that about covers it.

Cheaply constructed; will not last long; cheap plastic parts. Not at all sturdy. In other words, a throw-away shop item that I will have to "baby" to get any decent use out of. I am not asking for much, just tools that are built to last. My old workmate will LONG outlast this newer version. Black and Decker apparently has forgotten that each item they sell directly reflects upon each item that can potentially be sold by them. I am in the market to buy woodshop tools all the time. The terrible quality of this workbench makes me extrememly suspicious of their other products, and very unwilling to lay down hard-earned money in front of a company that skimps on quality. Quality shouldn't suffer from the least expensive product to the most expensive, period.

too much for the replacement vise panels (wood panels)!
I love my little workmate and I've had it for over ten years, but my wood panels are work out and replacements are $14/each. That's $28 in parts for an item that retails at $35. Too much B&D, too much!

    parts too expensive

    Trusty/handy little device

    With wheels much better!
This workmate with wheels is not made anymore, but it was a wonderful product! I use it almost every day. a) folding is easy, b) I do not have to carry it around, it rolls, c) it has a litle opening foot for hauling and rolling heavy objects. I hated the classic workmate, and really am delighted with this one. Edouard

    All about the Basics
After recieving this and assembling it, I went out to put my old one to rest and relized the construction differences. The old one was made with lots of metal, sturdy back then. But, for general clamping for cutting and sanding it works great and yes it can even be used a tool stand. Might have two around then for that.

Easy to move and store out of the way. Works great for around the home projects and Honey-do lists.

    Plastic slides for the vice.

Over 15 years and still going strong.
I have owned this product for over 15 years and it has held up well with all the projects I have completed. It is my stand to do everything from holding my mitre saw or wet saw. This stand has helped me in refinishing two basements and numerous projects in the homes I have owned over the past 15 years.

The wood and metal has held up over all the abuse I have put this product through.

The feet keep falling off. I makes it tough to use it on a floor that will scratch. Finding new feet has been difficult.

Not as good as they used to be
I got this to hold wood while cutting. Basic use only. It's not top quality...I remember my father's was better built. The parts were very greasy out of the box and one of the handles broke before the piece was put together. B&D did replace the broken handle with no hassles very quickly. That's why I like B&D, they do take care of things.

Does the job, holds stuff well and I guess that's what matters.

The wood used as the top isn't great and it's not real smooth to adjust. Overall for basic use it's fine. It doesn't fold down very flat either. It's mostly flat but you would think it would be a flatter fold. While hanging it on the garage wall it protrudes out some.

Makes a great stand for portable miter saw!
I originally purchased this workstand as just that. A clamping workstand/saw horse. But when I showed up at a job one day without the stand for my miter saw, I had to press this into service. And I have decided that while this is a great portable work stand, it is an even better portable tool stand. I ended up clamping my miter saw between the swivel pegs and it made for such a good sturdy platform that this has now become my portable miter saw stand. It works better than the factory stand. I bought another one to use with the tile saw. And I suppose I will need to get yet another one to use for clamping stuff I need to work on. In any case, this is a great tool.

Very versatile. Easy to set up and use. Stable and sturdy. Fairly inexpensive for what you get.

Be careful when folding it up. It can be a real finger pincher if you don't pay attention to what you are doing.

Absolute necessity for a home workshop
I have had the workmate for about 10 years now and use it for almost every woodworking project. I tend to use it to clamp work pieces in place for routing. I have also used it to be the base for many of my bench top tools like my dovetail jig and drill press. I even made a slightly larger table-top that I clamp into the workmate to act as a portable workbench. It is much sturdier than sawhorses and wood.

portability and versatility and durability. If it can last 10 years in my shop, it is definitely durable.

None that I can speak of after 10 years of use.
