Steam-Mop with SmartSelect™ Technology

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it kill 99.9% of germs?

The steam heats up to 374°F/190°C, and this superheated temperature ensures that germs and bacteria are destroyed.  The steam does the killing, and the pad does the cleaning.

Can you use regular tap water?

Yes, you can also use distilled or bottled water to prolong the life of the mop.

Can I use my regular liquid floor cleaner instead of water?

Only water should be added to the Black & Decker SmartSelect™ Steam Mop.  Do not use chemical cleansers with your steam mop.

What types of floors can I use this on?

The Black & Decker SmartSelect™ Steam-Mop can be used on all sealed floors.  It is intended for use on a variety of floor types, including tile, vinyl, stone, marble and sealed wood floors (laminates, hardwood, etc.).

Should I sweep or vacuum my floors before steam mopping?

Yes--always vacuum or sweep the floor before using the steam mop.

How long will it take for the water to be ready?

    Up to 15 seconds.

How do I know if my floors are sealed and safe to use this on?

Most hardwood floors are sealed, but some aren’t.  ALWAYS check with you floor manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations if there is any concern.  The Black & Decker SmartSelect™ Steam-Mop should only be used on sealed wood floors.

Do I need to empty the steam mop between uses?

Yes—the water tank should be emptied after use.

How often can I use this on my floors?

There is no limit to how often the Black & Decker SmartSelect™ Steam-Mop can be used on suitable floor types.

How long will this run on a tank of water?

Run time is typically 22-40 minutes, but will vary depending on the floor type and SmartSelect™ setting (tile, marble, wood, etc.).

Will it damage my floor?

The Black & Decker SmartSelect™ Steam-Mop can be used on a variety of floor types.  Following the manual’s operating instructions and hints for optimum will ensure maximum performance/cleaning without damage.

Will it remove wax from my floor?

On surfaces that have been treated with wax or some no-wax floors, the sheen may be removed by the heat and steam action.  It is always recommended to test an isolated area of the surface to be cleaned before proceeding.  We also recommend that you check the use and care instructions from the floor manufacturer.

How many washes will the pad take?

    100 washes/cycles.

What if my pad isn’t dirty after cleaning?

The appearance of dirt on the steam pad will depend of how clean the floors are at the time of use.  Although the pad may not appear dirty, it has still been used for cleaning and should be handled accordingly.

What if the water tank color doesn’t turn blue?

Be sure the power switch is in the ‘on’ position.  You may want to unplug the unit and plug it back in before pressing the power button.  If the light still does not illuminate, please contact Black & Decker customer service at (800) 54-HOWTO (800-544-6986).

How hot does the steam get?

The steam heats up to 374°F/190°.

What’s the resting mat for?

After steam mop usage, the unit should be placed on the resting mat to cool down (approximately five minutes).  The steam mop should never be left in one place on any surface for any period of time.  Always place the steam mop on the resting mat with the handle in the upright position when stationary and make sure the steam mop is turned off when not in use.

I lost my measuring cup, can I get another?

Replacement parts will be available via Black & Decker customer service at (800) 54-HOWTO (800-544-6986).

I need more pads, how do I buy them?

Replacement pads can be found at various national retailers and on-line.

What is microfiber and why is it important?

Microfiber is an ultra thin synthetic fiber, which is split, adding considerable area to the fiber to attract more dust, dirt and germs.  Microfiber picks up and holds onto dirt, dust and liquids while other materials may just move the dirt from one place to another.

Can I use my regular detergent when washing my pads in the washing machine?

Do not use bleach or fabric softeners when cleaning the pads.  The pads are machine washable in warn water (60°F/16°C), and should be allowed to fully dry before re-use.

Can I throw the microfiber pad in the dryer?

Yes, but do not use fabric softeners or dryer sheets as this may damage the effectiveness of the pad.

My mop is leaving water on my floor, what can I do?

Make sure your pad isn’t too wet.  If so, unplug the unit and put on a fresh, dry pad.  Also, be sure to check the SmartSelect™ setting to ensure it reflects the material on which the steam mop is being used.
