Autumn signifies a time when trees drop their leaves and plant growth slows to a halt. In addition to dealing with fallen leaves, this season is the perfect time to give the lawn one last mow and to trim overgrown tree branches, hedges and shrubs. A final fall cleanup not only makes the yard look better for the winter months, it also helps to ensure a healthy lawn next spring.

Below are the TOOLS + MATERIALS you'll need:

Things Youll Need

  1. Trim Trees and Manage Branches

Prune tree limbs and trim low-hanging branches up to 4" thick with the BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX* Lithium Alligator® Lopper.

Its jaws clamp down around the branch as you work, helping to ensure a secure, slip-free cut. If you have a fallen tree or larger tree limbs, use the BLACK+DECKER 40V MAX* Lithium 12 in. Chainsaw to cut into logs.

Save the wood for a fireplace or campfire, or cut it down to a size appropriate for your community's yard-waste pickup.

  2. Trim the Hedges

Trim hedges, shrubs and bushes with the BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX* Lithium 22 in. POWERCUT™ Hedge Trimmer.

Engage the push-button POWERCUT™ feature to help you get through any particularly tough hedges or jams, including branches up to 3/4" thick.

Bag up debris and set out for pick up by your community yard-waste service, or save the debris for a compost pile if you prefer to compost materials yourself.

  3. Clear and Mulch the Hard Surfaces

Use the BLACK+DECKER 40V MAX* Lithium Sweeper/Vacuum to blow leaves and debris off of hard surfaces, such as the patio and driveway.

Blow the debris into a pile in a corner of the yard. Switch the sweeper/vacuum onto vacuum mode to pick up the debris and mulch it into a lawn bag. The mulching fan compacts six bags' worth of leaves down into one bag for added convenience.

  4. Clear and Mulch the Yard

Blow debris out of grassy areas and flower beds with the BLACK+DECKER 12 Amp High Performance Blower/Vacuum/Mulcher.

Select the low-speed setting for flower beds and areas around delicate plants. Choose the high-speed setting to blow leaves that are damp or clumped together. Blow the debris into a consolidated area like a corner, and then switch to the vacuum mode to pick up leaves, grass and even small twigs.

Its high-impact vacuum fan is strong enough to mulch the volume of 16 bags of debris down into just one bag.

  5. Mow and Edge the Lawn

Now that the lawn and yard are clear of debris, mow the lawn with the BLACK+DECKER 40V MAX* Lithium 20 in. Mower.

If mowing through tall weeds or rough terrain, adjust the blade-height lever to the highest setting. To mulch the cut grass and dried leaves while you mow, remove the side discharge attachment and collection bag, slide the mulching insert in place and replace the side discharge attachment before mowing.

Finish your yard by trimming the edges with the BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX* Lithium EASYFEED™ String Trimmer/Edger. You can also use the trimmer to remove stray grass blades and weeds between slabs of pavement and around structures.

TIP: Always wear eye protection when performing yard work with powered tools.
