Overview

Cornhole, also known as Beanbag toss was invented, by most accounts, during the darkness of the middle ages in Europe. Lost for centuries, it was rediscovered in the back woods of Kentucky in the 19th century. However, the basic idea of the game—throw something at a target—has existed uninterrupted for many thousands of years.
Little equipment is needed to play beanbag toss—just a pair of wooden boxes with holes and several small cloth bags filled with dried beans or corn. The object is to throw the beanbags into the holes. The two boxes are placed so that the holes are 33 feet apart for standard play, though you may move the targets closer for players with limited throwing range. Players stand to the side of a box when pitching. Each player gets four bags to throw. A bag that goes into the hole is worth three points, a bag that lands on the box and stays put is worth one point, and a bag that ends up off the box is worth nothing. The first player to 21 wins.

Despite its simplicity, a serious game of beanbag toss can last for hours. Dried beans are the usual filler for the bags, though dried corn is preferred in some areas of the country.

Step 1

Making Beanbags

You can purchase beanbags inexpensively at any toy store, or you can make your own using dry navy beans or feed corn and extra cloth. Make bags in sets of four, each from matching cloth. You’ll need four bags per player. (Two to four players is typical). To make each bag, sew two 7" square pieces of duck cloth together on three sides, turn it inside out, and fill with two cups of dry beans or feed corn (it should be about 14 to 16oz.). Tuck the open end into the bag, pin it and then sew it shut and stitch around all the edges. The finished bag should be approximately 6 x 6".

Step 2

How to Make a Cornhole/Beanbag Toss Game

Cut the plywood underlayment panel into 24 x 48" boards using a circular saw and straightedge cutting guide (or a tablesaw if you have one). Lay out a 6"-dia. hole 6" down from the top of each panel and cut it out using a jigsaw. Tip: Jigsaws cut on the upstroke, so cut from the underside of the panel (if it has one) to minimize tear out on the top. Sand the cut edges thoroughly to smooth the edges and remove splinters.

Step 3

Assemble the frame. Drive 21⁄2" decks screws at the corner joints, making sure the corners are square. Cut two 111⁄2" long lengths of 2 x 4 for the legs for each target. Attach the legs by driving 21⁄2" deck screws through the legs and into the inside of the target frame. Attach the top panel to the frame with panel adhesive and 4d finish nails.
