Most patio enclosure structures have three basic elements: the foundation and the floor; the walls, windows and doors; and the roof system. Of these, the roof system is the most challenging element for the do-it-yourselfer. There are a variety of patio roof products to choose from, but one of the most economical solutions is to install a corrugated roof panel system. Corrugated panel systems are installed over a network of rafters and spacers, called "purlins." The rafters can be tricky to install because they must be trimmed at an angle where they meet the house. If the cutting angle for the rafters is not indicated on your construction plan, consult an engineer or a building construction reference book to find the required angle.
