How to Build a Lumber Storage Rack
Everything You Need:
Tools: 1 × 4 lumber, tape measure, saw, metal connectors, 1-inch wallboard screws, screwgun or cordless screwdriver, drill and 1/4-inch bit, 1 1/2-inch lag screws.

1. Measure height, length and width of rack area. For garage storage, make sure rack will hang above level of car hood. Lumber storage rack requires one U-shaped support every 4'.

2. From 1 × 4 lumber, cut 2 legs and 1 cross brace for each U-shaped support. Cross brace should be 7" shorter than overall width of storage rack.

3. Assemble legs and cross braces with metal connectors and 1-inch wallboard screws.

4. Drill 1/4-inch pilot holes through top of each leg and through ceiling joists. Attach supports to joists with 1 1/2-inch lag screws. On finished ceilings, attach 2 × 4 ceiling plates to ceiling, then attach lumber rack supports to the ceiling plates.
